The temptations of the antique business to make a profit can be just that, tempting. But some things are more important than profit. The acquisition of Dirk van Erp’s original tools from his workshop is hands down the most incredible acquisition I have ever made in more than 25 years in the Arts & Crafts antique business. I could have easily brokered a deal to a museum or wealthy client and made more money on one transaction than I have ever made. But that might have meant Dirk van Erp’s tools leaving the Bay Area or even leaving California.

In late January 2014, I entered a contract to buy the Dirk van Erp tools for $125,000 and a separate contract to buy the original Dirk van Erp display furniture for $24,000. The seller and I both agreed that the tools were worth much more and the seller is donating half of the appraised value of $250,000 to The Dirk van Erp Foundation, but we still need to raise $125,000 + $24,000 = $149,000 to purchase these pieces for the new foundation.

The Dirk van Erp Foundation is a registered non-profit with the State of California and was incorporated on March 28, 2014. We applying for tax-exempt status with the Internal Revenue Service under Internal Revenue code section 501(c)(3).

Dirk van Erp’s tools have been together since the close of the workshop in 1977 safely in storage until now. They need to stay together. The Dirk van Erp Foundation needs to first raise the funds to purchase the tools and furniture. We intend to loan out portions of the tools to accredited museums and institutions, but we intend to become a museum ourselves, The Dirk van Erp Museum.

The Dirk van Erp Museum will recreate the workshop and have a gallery of Dirk van Erp lamps, vases and other hand-crafted objects made by Dirk van Erp.

The Dirk van Erp Foundation will also become a metal working school where the greatest living coppersmiths will come and teach workshops on metal work. We need to preserve the legacy of Dirk van Erp by continuing the craft through education.

None of this can happen without your support. Become a member of The Dirk van Erp Foundation, or better yet, become a founding member of The Dirk van Erp Foundation.

Founding members will be recognized forever for their initial support of this incredible idea. We are limiting the Founding Members to ten people who donate $5000 or more to The Dirk van Erp Foundation.

You don’t need to be a Founding Member to help us out. Your donation of $100, $500 or even $20 will be greatly appreciated.

Anyone who would like to discuss helping us with our much broader plan of building a museum, The Dirk van Erp Museum, can contact Gus Bostrom.
